Spotify is making artist identity part of distribution infrastructure
On October 20, Spotify said Artist Profile Protection will expand from limited beta to all artists by the end of 2026. The system gives artists more control over releases attached to their profiles, including tools to review and remove incorrect associations.
For some protected profiles, a release may require artist approval before it can go live. Spotify may provide those artists with a private artist key that trusted distributors can submit for preapproval, although Spotify says the key may not work with every provider during the beta.
Spotify also said more than 300,000 artists are verified on the platform, more than 70% of them independent. The company reported tens of thousands of granular AI credits arriving each day through participating distributors, while AI-generated artist identities are excluded from recommendations by default.
What NORTH is preparing for
- Require the correct Spotify artist URL or URI for every existing primary and featured artist.
- Confirm whether NORTH’s delivery provider can transmit Spotify artist keys before exposing that field in the release form.
- Use structured AI disclosures covering vocals, lyrics, composition, instruments, production, and post-production instead of one broad AI checkbox.
- Store artist-profile selections, consent, and later disclosure changes in an audit trail.
- Warn artists that protected Spotify profiles may require approval before a release can go live.
Believe and TuneCore joined Spotify’s licensed AI-remix programme
Spotify and Believe also announced a licensing agreement on October 20 covering participating Believe and TuneCore artists and labels. Spotify’s planned paid Premium add-on will allow fans to create AI-powered covers and remixes, with royalties flowing to participating rightsholders and links directing listeners back to the original recording.
Participation is not a blanket AI opt-in. An artist first opts into consideration for AI programmes, then separately approves this specific Spotify programme. Spotify did not announce a launch date or price for the add-on.
The data model should be ready before the programme arrives
- Keep master-owner and composition-owner approval separate.
- Track consent per programme rather than using one universal AI opt-in.
- Record royalty splits, approval dates, revocations, and applicable territories.
- Ask the delivery provider whether independent downstream distributors may eventually become eligible for programme participation.
No NORTH pricing change this week
NORTH found no verified distributor pricing, packaging, or delivery-deadline change from October 19 through October 26 substantial enough to justify changing the current 85/15 offer.
The higher-priority work is operational: stronger artist identity mapping, structured AI provenance, and programme-specific rights and consent records.
