Understanding royalties, earnings, and splits

See how NORTH keeps the release royalty allocation connected to the catalog and reporting.

How NORTH splits work

The Splits tab controls how the release owner’s artist-facing royalty allocation is divided between the owner and collaborators. Every payee has a name, email address, and percentage, and the total must equal exactly 100% before NORTH can save the allocation.

A split collaborator does not need access to your NORTH workspace. Their accounting relationship is handled separately using the email address you enter for them.

Set the release allocation in NORTH

  1. 01

Open Releases, select the release, and choose Splits.

  2. 02

Review the release owner already listed on the split.

  3. 03

Choose Add collaborator for every additional person or company that should receive a share.

  4. 04

Enter each collaborator’s payee name, an email address they personally control, and the agreed percentage.

  5. 05

Adjust the percentages until NORTH shows exactly 100% allocated, then choose Save splits.

  6. 06

Wait for the saved-and-synced confirmation before leaving the page.

What happens after NORTH approves the release

After approval, the release owner should receive an automated split email. Every collaborator included in the NORTH split should receive their own email for their individual allocation.

The message identifies the NORTH allocation, lists the relevant release and track assets, and includes a Beneficiary Portal action. Each payee follows their own message; one payee cannot complete another payee’s setup.

Good to know

If a collaborator does not receive the message, first verify the email saved in NORTH, then check spam, junk, promotions, and filtered inbox folders.

Create your beneficiary account

  1. 01

Open the split email and choose the Beneficiary Portal action.

  2. 02

Create your beneficiary/payee account if this is your first allocation, or sign in if you already created one for an earlier release.

  3. 03

Complete the requested identity, tax, and payment setup inside the secure portal.

  4. 04

Accept the split allocation for the release.

  5. 05

Keep the portal account — future NORTH allocations and monthly earnings can be managed from the same payee environment.

Earnings and withdrawals

The beneficiary portal is where a payee can track royalty earnings as monthly reporting is processed. It is separate from NORTH analytics: NORTH analytics can update earlier, while royalty earnings follow financial reporting cycles.

When the available beneficiary balance reaches $50, the payee can request a withdrawal through PayPal from the portal. Balances below the minimum remain in the account and continue accumulating with future reported earnings.
